NEWS ON OUR SYRIAN FAMILY

(November 18, 2016)

They say that patience is a virtue.  It’s fair to say that as a community we’ve had plenty of opportunity to practice patience when it comes to our sponsorship initiative.

Initially, we excitedly anticipated our sponsorship family to arrive no later than February. We set up house, rallied volunteers and then waited, waited, and waited some more. We then found out that medical clearances were delaying our family. Once the ‘all clear’ was given, we were then advised they would arrive no later than November 1st. Great! Let’s rally again - but this time with some cautious optimism.

Unfortunately, that time came and went without any further word on our family.

We then reached out to our family directly through a local translator that has graciously offered her time and energy to support our team, and found out the cause of the delay. Our family is expanding from five children to six within the next few weeks (mid-December to be exact); hence, they are not able to travel right now. Once baby is born, it could take a few weeks or a few months to ensure everyone has permission and the appropriate documents to travel.

Through conversations with the family, we were also able to ascertain that ‘mom’ has a sister in Newfoundland. With this new information, we felt compelled to discuss with them if their wishes were to be reunited with their family already in Canada as they are likely not aware of the distance that would separate them once here or the cost to visit.

So – where does this leave us? Well, waiting a bit longer.4

The Sponsorship Team is working closely with the family, the government agencies and others to assess all options to ensure the best possible outcome.

We will continue to provide updates as they become available.

Thanks for your ongoing patience and support!

Syrian Sponsorship Update

(September 2016)

We’ve finally received some positive news on the arrival of our family. As you may be aware, St. Theresa’s in partnership with St. John the Evangelist parish have committed to sponsoring a Syrian family. Despite much planning and preparation - they’ve yet to arrive.

This past week we received written confirmation from the federal government that our family will be arriving by or before early November. While we’ve been given arrival deadlines in the past, we’ve been assured the last of the hurdles have now been cleared and we’re simply awaiting the completion of travel arrangements. To this end we should receive at least 10 days’ notice ahead of their arrival…so “any day now” is an accurate description of our holding pattern.

A new search has begun to secure appropriate housing and once found, help to move furniture collected and set up their home, along with a few other preparations to ensure they receive a proper welcome will be required. Stay tuned for more details on how YOU can get involved!

We’ve been in touch with our family through a translator and they are as eager and anxious to get here, as we are to welcome them into their new community.

Our family: Mom and dad in their 30’s, three girls and two boys all under the age of 12.

Updates will follow as they become available!

Thanks for your ongoing support!
